A tampon is inserted into the vagina, while urine comes out through the urethra – two totally separate openings. So you absolutely can go to the bathroom while using tampons – one does not interfere with the other. If you have concerns about the tampon getting wet with urine when you go to the bathroom, as long as the tampon is inserted correctly, the fibers of the tampon should not be exposed to the urine and should not get wet with urine – so this should not be a problem either.
For information on correctly using tampons, go to Planned Parenthood’s webpage Getting Comfy With Tampons or to the questions on TeenHealthFX.com under Females: Your Period.
If you have any questions or concerns about your period or about using tampons, you can also check in with your doctor. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
