Dear TeenHealthFX,
Why do men Pre-cum? Does it pertain to any disfunctions in the pennis or testicals?

Dear Why Is There Pre-Cum?,

For our readers who do not know, pre-ejaculatory fluid (also known as “pre-cum”) is the clear, colorless, viscous fluid that is emitted from the urethra of a man’s penis when he is sexually aroused. The fluid is usually secreted by what is known as the Cowper’s glands during arousal, masturbation, foreplay or at an early stage during sex, some time before the man fully reaches orgasm and semen is ejaculated. The amount of pre-ejaculatory fluid present among males varies widely from person to person, from a minimal amount to a significant flow.

The existence of pre-ejaculatory fluid does not mean that there is any type of problem or dysfunction of the male genitalia. In fact, it actually serves a purpose. This fluid prepares the urethra for the passage of semen by neutralizing acidity due to any residual urine. It also lubricates the movement of the penis and of the foreskin over the glans.

While the fact that a man emits pre-ejaculatory fluids is not a problem in and of itself, it is important to be aware that sperm can be present in these fluids, as well as HIV. That said, if two people having sexual intercourse are relying on the withdrawal method (where the male withdraws his penis prior to ejaculation; also known as “pulling out”) to practice safer sex, there are definitely higher risks of unwanted pregnancy occurring or of transmitting an STD than if a condom was used.

If you have any further questions or concerns about pre-ejaculatory fluids or any other area of functioning involving the penis or testicles, FX recommends that you speak with your doctor or an adolescent medicine specialist. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
