Very Large Nipples

Published: April 22, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am 16, and I have had big nipples since I was 13 and am very worried that they will not go away. I haven't been able to swim, take my shirt off in public, or even change in the locker room due to whatever's making them big. Will they go away? I have even been working out trying to proportion them with my chest size and it hasn't worked. Please tell me why and what will happen to me.

Dear Very Large Nipples,

TeenHealthFX understands that feeling uncomfortable about a part of your body can cause a lot of stress. Because you do not discuss your gender, we are going to assume that you are male due to the fact that you are uncomfortable taking your shirt off in public.

As your body matures your nipples may develop before your chest, so it is possible that your chest will continue to grow to catch up to your nipples. There is also condition called Gynecomastia, in which males experience breast and nipple development, which often cause nipples to appear to be "fluffy or swollen". This condition often goes away during adulthood.  Usually enlarged nipples are not a sign of a problem, but if you are very concerned, you may want to visit your physician.
