Leg Rash

Published: August 14, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I have a rash on the side of my left leg, near but not touching my penis. I have never had a sexual partner but do masturbate. Could I have herpes???

Dear Leg Rash,

TeenHealthFX is unsure of what is causing the rash and is unable to diagnose you over the Internet.

Although you have never had sex, you can get herpes from simply having skin-to-skin contact with a sexual partner so always be aware of your partner's sexual history and practice safer sex. Herpes appears as blister-like sores in the genital region.

You have described what seems to be more of an irritation from something like a new soap, your clothing or sweating (heat rash/jock itch). You also said that you masturbate. Some men can get irritations in that area from their own semen after ejaculating if it is left on the skin too long.

If your rash does not clear up in a day or so have a doctor look at it. It could be caused by any number of things and is probably indicating that you are allergic to something or that something is making that area irritated. See your doctor who will be able to identify the rash and recommend a method of treatment. If you do not have a physician and live in the Northern New Jersey area, you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.889.6350.
