Dear Boyfriend Bled During Sex - Could I Be Pregnant?,

TeenHealthFX first wants to confirm that it was, in fact, blood that was expelled from your boyfriend’s penis. If the substance was red, then it was most likely blood. But if the substance was clear or a creamy white substance than this would have been pre-ejaculatory or ejaculatory fluids – and it would be normal for these fluids to be expelled during sexual activity. If it was semen that you saw, then the important thing to do from now on would be to make sure that you use a condom each and every time you have sex. Ideally, it is also recommended that you use a back-up form of birth control such as the pill or patch. FX suggests that you speak with your primary care physician, a gynecologist or an adolescent medicine specialist about the best birth control methods for you.

In addition, if this was semen and you did not use a condom, it is absolutely possible that you are pregnant. FX suggests you speak to your doctor about this as well, or call one of the numbers listed below for free pregnancy testing center.

If it was red blood that was expelled from his penis, then FX suggests a few things. First, it is very important that your boyfriend is seen by a medical health professional because it is not normal for him to be bleeding out of his penis. He needs medical care as soon as possible so that a doctor can determine why this type of bleeding is occurring and provide whatever treatment is necessary.

Second, FX would recommend that if it was blood, that you meet with a doctor to be tested for STDs. Various STDs are spread either through contact with semen and vaginal secretions, through blood, or both. So if there was blood expelled, semen, or a combination of the two, and there was no condom used, an STD may have been transmitted.

Finally, if blood was expelled, it is possible that there was semen mixed in with the blood and that you subsequently got pregnant. Again, you would need to speak with your doctor or call one of the numbers listed below to find out for sure.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or Girl’s Street – A Young Woman’s Health Program – at 908.522.2555. You could also call your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood, or contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

If you need to find a free pregnancy testing center, you can call 866-942-6466. If this is an unplanned pregnancy, you can call 1-800-672-2296. And if you are pregnant, but have no medical insurance, you can call 1-800-450-0183.
