Dear Abortion, EC Pill, And Worries Of Pregnancy,

You did not say whether or not you had sex between 6/8 and 7/8. If you did not have sex since having your last menstrual period, then you are definitely not pregnant. If you did have sex after 6/8 but you took three pregnancy tests up to 3 days after your expected period date and they all came back negative, and you have experienced some spotting around the time you would have expected your period, then it is highly unlikely that you are currently pregnant.

As far as what to do, there are some people who are pregnant but who do not get a positive reading on their pregnancy test up to three weeks after their expected period date. So you could wait and take another pregnancy test in 2-3 weeks. You could also meet with your primary care physician, gynecologist, or adolescent medicine specialist who could determine whether or not you are pregnant. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

From what you have said it is unlikely you are pregnant. What actually concerns FX the most here is that you already had at least one abortion and continue to find yourself in situations where you worry about being pregnant. Before you continue with any kind of sexual activity, FX suggests the following:

·         Consider whether or not you are truly ready for sex in terms of the possible consequences there are to deal with. Having sex opens up the possibility for unwanted pregnancies and transmission of STDs. You have dealt with it at least once that we know of in terms of having an abortion – are you truly ready to continue to be sexually active and possibility deal with those kinds of consequences again?

·         Consider whether or not you are truly ready for sex in terms of being educated about how to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancies and STDs, understanding how pregnancy occurs, and feeling ready for the emotions that can come up when it comes to being sexually active. You can consider the questions in our answer to Want To Have Sex, But Not Sure If I’m Ready.

If you decide that you are going to continue to be sexually active, we advise you do the following:

·         Make a promise to yourself NOT to have unprotected sex again until the situation warrants it (i.e., you are an adult trying to have a baby).

·         Educate yourself about how pregnancy occurs. You can speak to your doctor as well as read our hot topic How You Can And Can’t Get Pregnant and look at some of our questions/answers under Pregnancy: General Pregnancy and Pregnancy Prevention Questions/Concerns.

·         Educate yourself on how to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of STDs. Read our hot topics on Info on STD Transmission and What Do I Need To Know About Birth Control, as well as our answers to Updated Birth Control Information and Can I Get An STD From My Virgin Girlfriend?

·         Speak with your doctor, gynecologist, or an adolescent medicine specialist about the best safer sex methods for you that will help to protect you from unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of STDs. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
