He Pulled Out

Published: February 22, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex and he had an orgasm, but it wasn't inside of me. He "pulled out". Do I have a chance of getting pregnant?

Dear He Pulled Out,

Anytime you have penetration without a condom you risk getting pregnant. The risk is less than if he ejaculated inside you, but there still is a risk and you should use protection to prevent pregnancy and STDs.

Most males discharge a small amount of fluid before ejaculation. It is a clear emission that can have a high concentration of sperm. This fluid is frequently called pre-cum.

The fluid is released during sexual arousal and usually is not felt by the male. A partner could obtain an STD (including HIV) or become pregnant, if the pre-cum comes in contact with their partner's vaginal area.

It is very important to use a condom from the very beginning of any sexual interaction between two people. Please be safe (see safer sex tips)!
