My Left Breat is Bigger Than My Right Breast - Is That Normal?

Published: May 02, 2017
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hello, I'm almost 18 and I noticed my left breast is bigger than my right one. Is that normal? I think it's always been that way, I think it actually started growing earlier. It's not like it's a problem but you notice the difference if you look closely. I can feel the bone on my left coming out a bit and I can't find any bone on the right side. Is that just what my body is like? does it have anything to do with my heart being on the left side?

Dear My Left Breast is Bigger Than My Right Breast - Is That Normal?,

Having different-sized breasts is a very common and normal thing. It doesn’t have anything to do with your heart being on the left size. According to TeensHealth:

Having different-sized breasts is perfectly normal. It's quite common for girls to have different-sized breasts or nipples, especially as they develop during puberty. Everyone's different, and no two women's breasts will look exactly the same. In fact, asymmetry — where one body part, like a foot or a hand, is a slightly different size or shape from its partner — is quite common in humans.

If you have any other questions about the difference in size between your two breasts, you could certainly ask your doctor about it during your next well-visit.

If you start to notice any sudden or significant changes with your body, experience ongoing pain or have any other reason to be concerned about your health, FX suggests you schedule an appointment with your primary care physician, adolescent medicine specialist or gynecologist.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
