Wants Info On Meridian

Published: June 10, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I really want and need to lose weight. I was thinking of taking Meridian. Can you tell me more about it? I asked my mom to take me to the doctor but she never did and I keep asking but she ignores me. Please can you give me information on this?

Dear Wants Info On Meridian,

Diet pills are rarely the answer to weight loss, especially when you are a teenager. Your body is still growing which means that you should not take any unnecessary over the counter or unprescribed medication. If you are concerned about your weight or how you look, discuss it with your doctor and he/she can evaluate you. A doctor can prescribe a diet and exercise plan best suited for your needs. Your doctor may also have you see a nutritionist (a medical person that specializes in weight loss).

Since you have already asked your mother to take you to the doctor and she has ignored your requests, it is time again to sit down and talk to her about your weight concerns. Let her know that this is a real issue to you and that you would like to go to the doctor. You can even print this question out and show it to her. If she ignores you again, talk to a trusted adult like a teacher or school nurse.

As far as weight management goes:
Many people, especially teenagers want a quick fix like appetite suppressants to help with weight loss, but it is important to
eat healthy and exercise regularly. Most people need help learning how to eat properly and changing their eating habits (what they eat and when). Diet pills can curb your appetite, but as a growing teenager your body requires more food than adults in order to grow normally. Also, once a person changes their eating behaviors and patterns and starts eating healthier, they will find that it becomes easier to maintain a good, healthy weight.

Although not recommended, here is some information on Meridian:
Meridian is a prescription weight loss medication indicated for obese adults, under a doctor's care only. FX does not expect any qualified medical professional to prescribe Meridian for a teenager. Please, think twice if someone does!

Diet pills do have both long and short-term side effects, including:

  • Heart problems
  • Increase risk of stroke
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fluid retention
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Shakiness
  • Hard time falling and staying asleep
  • Malnutrition
  • Binge eating when pill wears off
  • Rapid weight gain after you go off the pills!

It's important for you NOT to take any diet pills! Talk to your doctor and in the meantime, try to eat healthy and exercise regularly!
