Vegetarian Feeling Large

Published: February 26, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I'm 13 year old and weigh 106lbs. I'm a vegetarian, and my doctor says I'm doing fine getting al the nutrients I need. My friends all weigh between 80-87lbs. I know I shouldn't compare myself to them, but being so much bigger makes me feel constantly uncomfortable with myself. I've tried diet and exercise, nothing works, please help me!

Dear Vegetarian Feeling Large,

The most important thing here is that your doctor feels that you are doing fine. Remember that you and your friends are growing and that how you appear now is not necessarily how you will look in five years. A lot of adolescents are concerned about their weight and put too much pressure on themselves to look perfect. Being healthy is the most important thing and with proper diet and exercise this is easily attainable for most adolescents.

TeenHealthFX wants you to know that people come in all different shapes and sizes. If you are getting enough exercise and eating well, your body is probably where it should be. Try to accept your body for how it is; it is the only one you have.

Should your dissatisfaction persist then you may want to consult with your doctor again. You can also call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment if you live in Northern New Jersey.
