Dear Creatine Questions,
Creatine is a protein-like substance that is made in your body naturally. It is also a nutritional supplement taken to enhance muscle mass and strength, and to increase speed. In certain situations it has been shown to have some potential benefits, but it is not a quick fix and should not be taken by someone who is still growing.
The word is still out on creatine side effects, especially when used by teenagers. The research that has been done involves mostly college-aged people. Some of the side effects noted among athletes are muscle cramping, muscle pulls, dehydration, stomach cramping, upset stomach, and kidney problems. Because creatine is a fairly new supplement, the long-term effects are still unknown and will be for several years. FX does not recommend creatine because so much is still unknown and its something your body does probably not need, especially if you eating and training right.
A better way to improve muscle mass and strength is to follow a work out regime made especially for you. This will help to build muscle mass and strength safely without putting foreign substances into your body. Talk to your gym teacher, coach or doctor for help.
