Warning Signs Of A Dangerous Relationship

  1. Jealousy and possessiveness are not signs of a healthy relationship. Mutual caring and respect are far better ways of showing affection.
  2. Drugs and alcohol are never an excuse for inexcusable behavior. A boyfriend/girlfriend who has a problem with drinking or drugs may be more likely to become abusive.
  3. Bullying and intimidation have no place in a healthy relationship. If you feel scared or pressured, it is probably time to reevaluate.
  4. People change and sometimes relationships need to change with them. Just because a relationship started out on a positive note, if it no longer makes you happy there is no reason you can't end it.
  5. If your boyfriend or girlfriend is isolating you from your friends, family, or simply the things you like to do, it could be a sign that something is wrong. There needs to be a balance between time spent with your significant other and time spent with family and friends.
  6. Being embarrassed or criticized in public or in private is not acceptable behavior. Verbal abuse can be just as hurtful as any other kind and needs to be addressed.
  7. Any attempt by your significant other to hurt or scare you physically means that you are in a volatile and potentially dangerous situation.
  8. Games are not fun when they mess with your mind and your feelings. If you feel like you are being manipulated it may be cause for concern.
  9. If you are feeling really insecure about yourself or the relationship, it could be a sign that something is wrong.
  10. If you suspect at all that you may be involved in a situation that is making you uncomfortable and you can not handle on your own, talk to a parent, counselor or other trusted adult. You do not have to accept abusive behavior from anyone and there is lots of help out there for you.
