Teased A Girl - Want To Make It Right Now

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I'm a 15 year old boy in 9th grade and there was this girl in middle school who was very shy and a bit overweight. Me and some of my friends would often tease her, not really meaning to be mean, but she would sometimes cry. Now I feel really bad about it and I want to make things right with her, but I don't know how.

Dear Teased A Girl - Want To Make It Right Now,

Being teased by peers can be an extremely negative experience for many of the kids and teens who go through it. TeenHealthFX is sorry to hear that this girl had to experience being teased by you and your friends – but we do commend you for getting to a point where you feel badly about it and for wanting to do what you can to make up for what you did.

As for trying to make things right, FX thinks it would be wonderful for you to give her a face-to-face apology. It could mean so much to this girl just for you to say something like, “I was thinking about how my friends and I used to tease you in middle school. It was really wrong that we did that and I want you to know I’m truly sorry about what we did and if it was hurtful to you.” Don’t underestimate the positive effect such a small gesture can have!

Depending on how badly you feel about this teasing that occurred, and how far you want to go to “make things right,” you could also make some efforts that go beyond just working things out with this particular girl. You could make a conscious effort not to tease, bully, or say or do cruel things to peers from this point on. You could also stand up for any of your peers that you see being teased or bullied now or in the future. Finally, you could even speak to your school principal, school social worker, or guidance counselor about implementing a program in your school that helps kids who are being teased or bullied..

Again, FX thinks it is wonderful that you want to make up for your past actions. We do hope you speak to this girl and apologize – but we also hope you consider ways in which to help others who are being teased or bullied as it certainly can be a very difficult thing to endure. We can’t change the past – but it’s great to let our past experiences positively influence how we want our futures to be!
