Annoying Itch

Published: March 01, 2014
Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hi, about a week ago my butt crack was annoyingly itchy every so often, and sore around the tailbone area. It is still there has actually gotten a little worse. It hurts to stand up or sit down. If I'm sitting I practically have to sit on my side to keep it from hurting, and its recently started to bleed a little when I go to the bathroom

Dear Annoying Itch,

TeenHealthFX’s philosophy is that diagnosing over the internet is an educated guess at best. Not good enough odds when dealing with someone’s health. To learn exactly was has been bothering you need to be examined by a doctor and complete whatever testing deemed necessary. This was you can get a definitive diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan.

From your description it is possible that what you are experiencing is a perineural cyst. They form at the base of the spine and most people who have them never know they are there. The most common symptom associated with perineural cysts is pain. For most cases of perineural cysts, no treatment is needed. If a patient starts experiencing pain, they may need treatment to relieve the pressure called by the enlarged cysts. You still need to be seen by a doctor to get a conclusive diagnosis.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside of this area you can look for a local teen health center or check with your insurance carrier,
