Dear TeenHealthFX,
My boyfriend and I were messing around, and I started to have a panic attack (bad past experiences), how do I deal with panic attacks when in situations like that?

Dear Panic Attack & Past Experiences,

We are sorry to hear that you are having a difficult time. Panic attacks can be hard to deal with when you aren’t sure how to handle them. TeenHealth suggests that you start by talking to your parents or another trusted adult about how you feel sometimes and your past experiences.  It would be also very helpful for you to talk with a mental health professional. In a safe and private space, you can explore the causes and symptoms of your panic attacks and develop coping strategies.

There are several self-help techniques that you can use now to help you cope.  If you can move to a quiet place. Focus on your breathing by taking long, slow deep breaths. Panic attacks last only a few minutes. Remind yourself that what you’re feeling will pass. Visualize a happy peaceful place. Have an open, honest discussion with your boyfriend. This can help put your mind at ease as well as keep him in the loop, so he knows how you feel.

If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding out more information or a therapist, you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888-247-1400.
