Cut On Boyfriend's Penis During Sex

Published: February 07, 2018
Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend and I had sex yesterday (it's not our first time) we have been together for 7 months now and this is the first time my boyfriend got a cut below his tip. We were having sex and we both felt at one point something when it slipped out and hit my clit however we kept going until a min after when he felt pain and he took it out and checked that he got a small cut but was bleeding. The bleeding had stopped after a few minutes although I’m not sure how he got this cut. Could the reason be because when he slipped out it hit hard on his skin that was pulled back or ? We are both healthy 100% we have been checked for our program and we are healthy.

Dear Cut On Boyfriend's Penis During Sex,

To begin, TeenHealthFX recommends that all sexually active teenagers use condoms every time they have sexual intercourse. Condoms are the only form of birth control that protect from sexually transmitted infections, and should be used in addition to another form of birth control for best protection.

To continue, you stated that your boyfriend has a cut below the tip of his penis. You did not mention if he is circumcised.  When foreskin does not retract easily during sexual intercourse, discomfort can occur, and thus, can lead to tearing. This cut could also be the result of several possibilities, including: rough sexual intercourse, infection, hygiene related issue or acquired allergy.

Being that TeenHealthFX cannot conduct a proper diagnosis, we recommend that your boyfriend schedules an appointment with his doctor and/or urologist. He/she can examine the cut, test for sexually transmitted infections (STDs), and determine if treatment is necessary. If your boyfriend's cut continues to bleed and/or cause pain,  it is important that he informs his doctor.

If your boyfriend does not have a doctor and lives in northern New Jersey, he can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact his local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if he has concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. He can also contact his insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

Until your boyfriend is able to visit his doctor, FX suggests the following:

  • Avoid sexual activity until the tear has healed
  • Do not use topical cream or medication unless recommended by a doctor
  • In order to avoid irritation and/or infection, do not touch the tear

FX suggests that you and your boyfriend check out the following resources so that you can both learn about sexual readiness, how pregnancy happens, pregnancy tests, emergency contraception, birth control, STDs and more. The more educated you are about these topics, the more likely you will make healthy decisions for yourself and one another when it comes to your sexual health.
