Dear Opium,
Opium is derived from a white liquid produced by the poppy plant. Opium is a drug that serves as the source of several legal (codeine and morphine) and illegal (Heroin) drugs. Illegal opium usually comes in dark brown chunks or powder and is generally eaten or smoked. It is very addictive.
Opium should only be used medically (be prescribed by a doctor). It can be a very dangerous drug and abusing it can lead to physical dependence and medical problems. In addition, if someone is withdrawing from an opiate, they are often under medical care because this is not a drug that a person can quit cold turkey. Because of the extreme physical dependence, a person often needs medical and psychological help to overcome an addiction.
