Over The Counter & Prescription Drugs / Question

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I was just wondering if pharmaceutical amphetamines are just as dangerous as other types of amphetamines, such as crystal meth.

Signed: Pharmaceutical Amphetamines

Dear Pharmaceutical Amphetamines,

Amphetamines that can be obtained by prescription are equally as dangerous as ones available on the street, such as crystal meth. Called "ice" or "crystal", crystal meth is the same substance known as "speed" which was abused several decades ago. Ending a binge on methamphetamine creates "crash" related effects such as fatigue and depression. Both prescription and street amphetamines stimulate the central nervous system causing increased heart rate, decreased food intake, and increased activity. Generally the user neither eats nor sleeps. One of the profound toxic effects of repeated methamphetamine use is the development of a paranoid psychosis or loss of reality. This may persist for many months even with time off the drug.

If you are using crystal meth or any drug, TeenHealthFX urges you to consider professional help-through your physician, a school counselor, or Narcotic Anonymous. If the drug problem is dealt with and treated properly, the chances are good that you can reverse any health concerns and gain the support of others.
