Suicide / Question
Published: February 5, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have a serious problem. I've been suicidal since 5th grade and I've been put down a lot from my parents and from nasty people at school. I've been cutting myself since I was 12 and I'm now 15. I have cuts everywhere. It seems like it's the only way to release my feelings. My shrink and medicine don't seem to be helping. Every time I come home from school I just have to cut and I cry because I don't see what I've done to make everyone hate me so much. Now I feel ugly with all my cuts on my wrists and legs and arms. Please help me.

Dear Alone & Suicidal,

TeenHealthFX is sorry you are having such a hard time.

You need to let your psychiatrist know that your medication is not helping you and that you are still cutting and feeling suicidal.  He or she can help you deal with what is going on better if you are totally honest with what you are feeling.  Your psychiatrist should also be able to talk with your parents and school and advocate for the proper supports you may need.

Cutting and feeling suicidal is no way to live your life. Depression is a treatable illness and with the right combination of therapy and medication you can get through this.  For more information and resources about cutting, check out Self-Abuse Finally Ends (S.A.F.E.) Alternatives.

If you get to the point that you are seriously considering suicide or are afraid of your impulses then you need to seek help immediately. You can call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency room. In northern New Jersey you can also call the crisis hotline from Morristown Memorial hospital at 973-540-0100. Outside this area call the Suicide & Crisis Hotline, 1-800-999-9999, 24 hours, 7 days a week
