Dear TeenHealthFX,

How can I tell if I have Social Phobia? I think I may have it.

Signed: Social Phobia

Dear Social Phobia,

You did not mention why you feel you have Social Phobia. However, it probably would not change our response since TeenHealthFX does not make any diagnosis over the Internet. The bottom line is if your symptoms are having a negative impact on your life, then you should get help. Sometimes talking to a trusted adult, such as a parent, school counselor or school nurse can help. If the problem is seriously interfering with your life then you may want to seek help from a mental health professional. Therapy can help you learn to cope with the anxiety that makes it so difficult to cope with social settings.

The clinical term, Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder) is a psychiatric condition that has specific diagnostic criteria and severely impairs a person's ability to function. The essential feature is a persistent and intense fear of situations in which the person is exposed to the scrutiny of others and fears that he or she may do something or act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing. A person becomes so afraid of the situation that they are unable to function. There is also recognition by the individual that the fear is excessive or unreasonable.

There is also something called shyness that has a lot of the same features, but is not as debilitating. Adolescent often go through situations that can produce a "phobic type" response without being classified as having the disorder. Going to a new school and making new friends or having to speak in front of a class can produce a lot of anxiety. This is a natural reaction many people would have and it does not mean there is anything wrong with the person.

Again, if you feel that you may have a social phobia that is interfering with your life or you need help, please find a therapist. In northern New Jersey you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888.247.1400.
