Worries, Fears and Anxiety Disorders / Question
Published: May 14, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Just lately I have been feeling very paranoid going out of the house. I am struggling; I don't know what's happening. At night its worse, I keep thinking someone is breaking in. I can hear every slightest noise. I need something to calm me down, my heart feels that I has a lot of pressure put on it. I can't control myself its been going on for about a month. I know I should see a doctor but don't want to be classed as a freak. Is there any home remedies I could use to get me to sleep and calm me down whilst out in public. I am only 20 years old and don't want it to get worse.

Dear Feeling Paranoid And Don't What To Do,
It is important for you to see your doctor as soon as possible. Those who seek professional advice are not considered "freaks". Addressing and treating symptoms you have does not make you a freak, it is a sign of strong character to recognize your own problems and actively solve them. All of your visits and treatments will remain confidential as within any medical profession.
TeenHealthFX is concerned for you. Have you had any sudden changes or stressful events in your life? Is there exceptional stress at home, work or school? Has any one thing triggered your feelings more than another?
Based on your question there are many feelings of anxiety also present. Physical symptoms of anxiety include a rise in blood pressure, a fast heart rate, rapid breathing, and an increase in muscle tension; intestinal blood flow decreases, sometimes resulting in nausea or diarrhea. The psychological components include overwhelming and irrational fears that can vary in severity. People can avoid or at least endure these situations, but in some cases, the anxiety associated with the feared object or situation can be really bad. You also mention feeling paranoid. Paranoia is a distrust, dislike and suspiciousness of others. Often, others' motives are interpreted as bad by a paranoid person. Paranoia and anxiety are often present together. Since you are exhibiting these symptoms and realize that you have a problem it is really important that you seek therapy.
In time and with professional help and therapy, you will learn how to cope and endure such feelings. If untreated your feelings and symptoms may prevent you from completing everyday tasks and achieving your dreams.
At home remedies may mildly help you. Many sleep remedies focus on the physical road blocks to sleeping, not many can help calm a very active mind.
Again, TeenHealthFX strongly urges you to see your doctor. He or she can perform tests and rule out any underlying physical conditions and subsequently refer you to the appropriate mental health specialist. TeenHealthFX understands that this is a very scary situation, but one that you do not have to endure alone. Identifying the cause and treating your symptoms will help you alleviate the pressure and paranoia you are feeling.
