Suicide / Question
Published: April 28, 2007

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Lately I have been having these weird bursts of depression were I just feel like killing myself. What is weirder and scarier is that I think it comforting to know I have the option of suicide so I won't feel so lonely anymore. I really think people who are young and need help should read you answer in hope of finding help they need as well as myself.

Dear I Just Feel Like Killing Myself,

TeenHealthFX is very sorry to hear that you have been struggling with depression and have gotten to the point of feeling like the “option” of suicide is a comfort. You mention the importance of young people, including yourself, realizing that there is hope for those who are feeling depressed, lonely and/or suicidal, and FX wants to stress that there is most definitely hope that situations can get better and that feelings can improve. It may take some time and work – but it is absolutely possible to change things for the better!

If you are feeling depressed or suicidal, the first thing FX recommends is that you find a way not to feel so alone in what you are dealing with. These types of emotional issues are best addressed by professionals trained in dealing with these specific types of problems. And it is easier for people to work towards positive changes when they feel like they have others whom they can lean on and look to for support and guidance. That said, if you have not done so already, we suggest that you let your parents know about how you have been feelings. It is very important that your parents know how you feel so that they can learn how to be there for you in a helpful way, as well as to arrange a consultation with a mental health professional to determine whether therapy, medication management, or a combination of both would be most helpful for you.

Since you sound like you have been feeling very lonely, it might also be helpful to see whether any groups are available for people your age through school or through a local mental health agency or hospital. Often people find that they feel less alone with their feelings and experiences when they can speak with others who are dealing with the same kinds of things.

FX also suggests finding a healthy outlet for any negative feelings, such as using journaling, music, or artwork to express your thoughts and feelings.
