Dear How I Dealt With My Depression,

TeenHealthFX appreciates your sharing your experience with us. It can be very helpful for our readers to hear about things that were helpful to their peers – directly from their peers.

FX agrees that a part of effectively dealing with depression means trying to stay occupied with positive and constructive activities, as well as finding enjoyable things to do. For some people, ensuring that they are involved and connected to wonderful things and special people can really make quite a difference in their mood.

However, FX would like to stress that while these things can be helpful, they may not be the only thing required in dealing with a depressed mood depending on the severity of the depression. If a person finds becoming more involved is not enough to elevate their mood, they should also consider meeting with a mental health professional trained in treating mood disorders in addition to some of the changes suggested above.

If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 973-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area.
