Dear TeenHealthFX,

I used to be a completely healthy, normal child who everyone liked. Everyone still likes me, but I don't feel any sort of emotion at all. It's been roughly two years since I felt any discernable emotion. When I'm in public I pretend to find things funny or sad, when it just doesn't matter to me. What does this mean? I feel like some kind of psychopath.

Dear Two Years Since I Felt Any Discernable Emotion,

There are several possibilities as to why you have not experienced any discernable emotions over the past two years. You may be dealing with a mild or moderate depression that is affecting your overall mood. In addition, some people who are dealing with any kind of difficult situation or stressor end up turning off their emotions (without even realizing it or intentionally doing it) to avoid dealing with any pain, sadness, or anger. But often when the negative emotions are stopped the positive ones are too – and a person can be left feeling kind of flat and emotionless. If you have been dealing with any kind of stressors over the past few years, this could also be a possibility for you.

Without knowing more about you, FX can only speculate – so we do feel it is important for you to meet with a mental health professional for a consultation. That way you can get a better understanding of why your mood is the way it is, and you can discuss treatment options that will allow for a broader range of moods.

If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 973-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area. You can also contact your insurance company to get a list of in-network mental health providers or check with your school social worker or psychologist to get a list of referrals in your area.
