Published: November 17, 1999
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am a 17-year-old who was abused 13 years of my life. Is it likely I will become an abuser?
Signed: Possible Abuser
Dear Possible Abuser,
The fact that you are concerned about becoming an abuser is a very good. You are already one step ahead of the game.
Studies show that those who were abused are more likely to abuse, but this is not always the case. Seeking counseling to talk about the effects the abuse had on you is the number 1 way to stop the pattern from continuing. There are often other issues that go along with abuse such as the inability to communicate, anger management, depression, fear and other topics. If you do not have a counselor and live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.5199. If you live outside of Northern New Jersey, please contact your local teen health center.
By the way, if there is any abuse currently going on (or even if you fear this could happen), please call the Division for Youth and Family Services at (800) 792.8610.
Please seek help and talk to a counselor!!!!!!
