Childhood Sexual Abuse / Question
Published: September 30, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I know that if you tell a mandated reporter (like a teacher or guidance counselor) that you are being abused, they have to report it... but what if you tell them about how you used to be abused (like 5-10 years ago)...do they still have to report it anyway? I want to tell someone about how I was abused because I can't live with it alone anymore, but I am too afraid that whoever I tell will have to report it. I am fifteen now, but I was abused until I was eleven. Please help me out!

Dear Is Reporting Old Abuse Mandatory,
Since you are still a minor any of these "mandated reporters" would be obligated to notify Child Protective Services in your area. However you have to realize that the goal of this agency is to make sure that you and your environment is safe. If the abuser was in a caretaker role (parent, guardian, foster parent) or anyone living in the house, then they may be required to take action to ensure your safety. That most likely would involve removing the abuser from the setting or if your safety was in jeopardy, placing you in safer surroundings. They would also have to devise a treatment plan that would address your needs as well as the needs of the family.
If the abuser were outside the family then Child Protective Services would have a more limited role. They would primarily be interested in seeing that you received the proper support and treatment. In most cases they would refer the case to the local prosecutor but that does not necessarily mean the case will be prosecuted. A lot would depend on whether the case went to court including whether it was something you wanted to pursue.
Living alone and in fear is often a symptom of being abused because of the shame and guilt surrounding the abuse. TeenHealthFX wants to assure you that you did nothing wrong and there is absolutely no reason for you to suffer in silence or alone. There are many specially trained therapists and support groups who deal with victims of sexual abuse. These therapists are familiar with the complicated emotions that result from sexual abuse and can guide you through the process of recovery Supports groups are comprised of other women or men who have had a similar experience and can provide you their experience, strength and hope.
If you would like information on finding services in your area or would like to more information on sexual abuse checkout the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAIN) website or call them at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673), 24 hours, 7days a week.
