Dear TeenHealthFX,

Can you give me some ideas for post prom celebrations?

Dear Prom Celebration Ideas,

Prom season is here, and your question gives TeenHealthFX an opportunity to mention the joys and potential pitfalls of this special night.

For many teens this is a very important milestone during high school; a night that could prove to be the best or the worst depending on the decisions you make. A decision not to use alcohol or drugs can guarantee a safe evening for you as well as others. Pre-planning can also be a smart way to head off any potential problems.

So, this is where your question comes in.

If your school does not already have one, a post prom party committee may be a good place to begin. Schools, parents, and your community have a vested interest in keeping you and your peers safe during prom season. Often, sponsors can be found and businesses donate the use of their facilities to have an alcohol-free night. You might want to contact a local business that specializes in parties to see if they could help. Indoor rock-climbing, laser-tag, and casino night (with fake money of course!) are fun alternatives.

Now is a good time to start a dialogue with your parents about prom night, curfews, and a game plan should you get into a situation that is unsafe. Many communities have a "no questions asked" policy that provides transportation for those who are intoxicated or with someone who is intoxicated.

Remember, this is one night of your life - act responsibly and you will have no regrets.
