Dear June 2008: Do You Know Of Any Good Books On Eating Disorders?,
Lorri Antosz Benson and her daughter Taryn Leigh have written a book where they discuss both sides of an eating disorder struggle in DISTORTED: How A Mother and Daughter Unraveled the Truth, the Lies, and the Realities of an Eating Disorder.
Our current culture is abundant with people who are dealing with various types of weight and eating issues. Distorted, therefore, is a timely and pertinent book as it takes it’s readers through one teen’s battle with anorexia and bulimia. And what is particularly unique about this book is that it gives the perspectives of both the teen and her mother as each one struggles through understanding the diseases, going through their part of the treatment, and dealing with impact of these diseases on themselves and their family members.
This mother-daughter writing team provides guidance for the millions of Americans today struggling with or affected by an eating disorder by exploring the following:
- the psychological factors that can contribute to eating disorders
- the impact eating disorders can have on the person who has been diagnosed, as well as on his/her family members
- the various feelings and behaviors often seen in people struggling with eating disorders
- the critical nature of family support and participation for the recovery process
- an understanding that the family cannot force change or recovery onto a person dealing with an eating disorder – that he or she must be ready and willing for the change to occur.
Through Distorted the authors talk about the wrong turns they took and the false beliefs that had to be dealt with while on the road to recovery. They discuss the significant consequences of the diseases that had to be addressed, and they make clear the importance of loving communication and the ability to take responsibility for their own personal lives in order for all to be able to move forward in a positive direction.
Lorri Antosz Benson is a two-time Emmy-award winning talk show producer and nationally-syndicated columnist who wrote about talk shows for Tribune Media Services for 11 years. While the Senior Producer for “DONAHUE,” she appeared on such shows as
