Dear TeenHealthFX,

Is it harmful to crack your knuckles and back, or is it just an old wive's tale?

Signed: Knuckle & Back Cracker

Dear Knuckle & Back Cracker,

There is no proven harm or good controlled studies that prove that cracking the back and knuckles is harmful. There is some controversy though as to the sound you hear when they are being cracked. Doctor's are not really sure, but think it is either a release of gas due to the shifting of the joint or to the shifting of ligaments, tissues or tendons.

So the final answer is: If it feels good, it is okay to do. If it feels bad or uncomfortable, stop immediately!

Even though cracking your back and knuckles sometimes can feel good, it needs to be done in a private area. Sometimes people may find this socially unacceptable or do not like the sound and look of someone cracking their knuckles or back. So to be respectful, please do not do it in public.
