Other Skin Conditions: Moles, Birthmarks, Dryness, Etc. / Question
Published: September 30, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have had a skin condition on the tops of my arms, around the bicep area. It's like permanent goose bumps. They are always red. What is this condition? How can I make it go away?

Dear Goose Bumps,

Although it is difficult to give an accurate diagnosis over the web, the skin condition you described sounds like Keratosis Pilaris, often known as "chicken skin." This is a common condition with an unknown cause resulting in a "gooseflesh" appearance. Plugs in the hair follicles cause the skin surface to feel rough and dry. This type of skin is aggravated by cold, dry climates and is usually associated with extremely dry skin.

Mild forms can be aided by using moisturizers at least twice a day for as long as necessary. If this form of treatment does not seem effective consult your health care provider to reaffirm the diagnosis and consider creams and lotions only available by prescription.
