Dear Cancer Risks,
TeenHealthFX is pleased to see that you are taking in active interest in your life to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Some things you can do to help prevent cancer are:
- Do not smoke
- Eat a balanced diet including plenty of fruits, vegetables, and fiber
- Exercise regularly
- Always wear proper sun protection (hat, sunglasses and sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher for UVA and UVB rays) and avoid being in the sun between 10 AM and 2 PM as much as possible
- Perform monthly self breast exams or testicular self exam
Along with these suggestions, remember that one key to staying healthy is to monitor your health. Make it a point to get yearly physicals done by your doctor. Women should have regular mammograms (starting at age 40) and pap smears done by their gynecologist and men should have yearly testicular exams. Even though not all cancers are preventable; the earlier cancer is detected the better chance you will have of a recovery.
The American Cancer Society is a wonderful resource for further information.
