Dear Depressed About Acne,

Acne can be a really hard thing to deal with in your teen-aged years, but you are not alone - you are very right, many people your age do have acne and have written in to TeenHealthFX for help with it.

It is terrific that you have gone to see a doctor about your situation and are taking the prescribed medication.  As far as your skin goes, treating it properly and gently while sticking with your doctor's treatment program are the best things you can do. It is really important to realize that your skin, like any other part of your appearance, is not a determining factor in who you are as a person.  We know it is hard when you are unhappy with the way you look, but you need to try to appreciate all of the wonderful qualities that make you the special person that you are rather than focusing on what you see in the mirror.  You have probably heard this before, but good looks do not make for a happy life.  Things like forming meaningful relationships with friends and family, finding outlets that are interesting and fulfilling and doing your best in your endeavors are far more important.  If you try to stay focused on things like these, the rest usually follows.  Remember -- the people that really matter will care for and stick by you no matter what your skin happens to look like.

If you continue to feel like your feelings about your acne are preventing you from talking to people and getting in the way of your day to day living, then TeenHealthFX thinks it would be a good idea for you to talk to a trusted adult like a school nurse, teacher or parent who can help you get the support you need to feel better. They can refer you to a counselor who deals with teenagers that are feeling unhappy.
