Dear TeenHealthFX,
for a few years now i have suffered from acne, i know its common in teens but i find that i do not like my boyfriend getting too close to me because of it. i take medication and sometimes my skin is quite clear, but when its not i become depressed and do not want to talk to anyone. some people think im being rude by ignoring then when really im embarassed and ashamed of it. what should i do?

Dear Depressed About Acne,
Acne can be a really hard thing to deal with in your teen-aged years, but you are not alone - you are very right, many people your age do have acne and have written in to TeenHealthFX for help with it.
It is terrific that you have gone to see a doctor about your situation and are taking the prescribed medication. As far as your skin goes, treating it properly and gently while sticking with your doctor's treatment program are the best things you can do.
If you continue to feel like your feelings about your acne are preventing you from talking to people and getting in the way of your day to day living, then TeenHealthFX thinks it would be a good idea for you to talk to a trusted adult like a school nurse, teacher or parent who can help you get the support you need to feel better. They can refer you to a counselor who deals with teenagers that are feeling unhappy.
