Acne & Scarring / Question
Published: December 7, 1999

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a swimmer, and I have an oily face. The chlorine does help dry out my face, but I still break out! Do you have any ideas on what kind of face wash I should use that will help control my breakouts? Remember, I swim 24/7 too. Thanks

Dear Swimmer With Breakouts,

It sounds like you have acne, a skin condition that is common among teenagers. Acne is caused by oil and bacteria that clogs hair follicles. Because you are a swimmer, the chlorine may be helping to decrease and dry out some of the oil on your face. Either way, it definitely does not sound like it is curing the problem.

Your best bet is to talk to your doctor about some over the counter or prescribed medication. In the meantime, take a look at No More Zits. The answer to this question gives some helpful hints on some home remedies and treating acne.
