Hairy Situations: Too Much, Too Little & Shaving / Question
Published: August 15, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have small hair growing on the upper part of my cheeks-not like a beard and I'm not a boy but it grows like where my upper cheekbone is. I have noticed the other girls have this but you can't see it that well because they unintentionally cover it up with their make-up, but I would like to get rid of it without wearing make-up.

Dear Hair On My Cheeks,

It sounds like you have what everyone has on their face - "peach fuzz." How much each person has varies according to their genetic makeup so some people will have more than others will and some people will have more noticeable hair than others will. This hair is a layer of protection for you skin, but sometimes it can be problematic.

There is not a lot that you can do about this hair. People remove body hair on other parts of our body by waxing or shaving and sometimes by using depilatory lotions. TeenHealthFX does not suggest using these methods, as they can be very irritating to the sensitive skin of your face. The easiest way to remedy the hair problem is to cover it with face powder or make-up. Although you do not want to wear makeup there are many options in the type of powder or foundation that you can wear that are light and hardly noticeable that you can try. If you are having a hard time figuring out what makeup to try, you could go for a makeover at a cosmetic counter. Explain to them exactly what you want to cover and that you want to look natural and do not like the feel of make up. .

If makeup does not work for you then you might want to see a dermatologist. They may be able to give you some other options for hair removal. They will be able to suggest a method that is safe for you face.
