Stomach Issues & Nausea / Question
Published: January 16, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I have a problem with my stomach. My stomach hurts almost everyday and I have diarrhea a lot. Is there anything I can do to stop this? And I absolutely hate the taste of Pepto-Bismol, but it seems to work but only for a couple of days. What do you recommend?

Dear Frequent Stomaches,
TeenHealthFX recognizes that this must be very uncomfortable and disturbing for you, but commends you for taking notice to your body and how it functions. Unfortunately, TeenHealthFX is unable to make a medical diagnosis, but recommends a few things:
- First, take notice to your diet - keep a food diary. Does your stomach bother you after eating certain foods (spicy, greasy, dairy, etc.)? If so, discontinue such foods for a few days and see how you feel - you may have a food sensitivity or allergy.
- Second, take notice to when your stomach bothers you most. Are you in a situation that evokes stress or anxiety? Are you feeling upset or angry? Often our emotions and/or frame of mind effect the way we feel physically. Perhaps this is associated with your frequent stomachache. If this is the case, talk to a trusted adult about how you are feeling and ways to better handle such situations.
TeenHealthFX strongly recommends that you see your doctor. It is very important for you to feel better and reduce your symptoms. Over-the-counter stomach medications are not intended for daily use. Your doctor will be able to diagnose your symptoms and then will be able to make treatment recommendations. So, speak with a parent/guardian about your symptoms and need to see a doctor, as soon as possible. If you do not have a doctor and live in the northern New Jersey area, you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475.
See a doctor soon - your well being is worth it!
