Pee & Urine Issues - Pain, Bed-Wetting, Amount & Frequency / Question
Published: May 7, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am a 19-year-old female. I seem to urinate very frequently. I drink a lot of water but urinate way to often - I have been up to 6 times in 30 min! I normally wake up at least once at night and urinate. I have relatively normal menstrual periods and I am not sexually active. I have had this problem for years now. I not only urinate frequently but also urgently. Should I be concerned about this? I do drink a lot of fluids. If I should be concerned, what type of doctor should I see about my problem? What kind of exam would I have to undergo? What could be the problem? And what type of treatments would be provided? Thanks so much for your help.

Dear Tiny Tank - Frequent Urination,
Since this has been bothering you for some time it would be a good idea to see a doctor, specifically a urologist who specializes in ailments of the male and female urinary tract.
Some of the common causes of frequent urination are:
- Excessive fluid intake
- Urinary tract infection
- Pregnancy
- Prostatitis (infected or inflamed prostrate gland) - in males
- Radiation therapy
- Diabetes
When you visit the doctor he/she will ask about your medical history and any relevant questions related to your condition and then perform a physical exam. Your doctor will probably ask for a urine sample so that a urinalysis or urine culture can be preformed to see if an infection is present.
The treatment depends on the cause for your problem. For example, if an infection is suspected, antibiotics are prescribed.
Remember this is an overview and only your doctor can make a diagnosis and prescribes the proper course of treatment. If you would like to meet with a doctor from the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health in Morristown, New Jersey, you can call 973.971.6475 for an appointment.
