Dear TeenHealthFX,
What can I expect at a 14-year-old checkup?

Dear 14 And Due For A Check-Up,
The 14-year-old checkup is a great opportunity for you to ask any questions you have related to all aspects of your health. Besides questions you have regarding your body and any recent changes, you can speak to your provider about your moods, difficulties you may be having in getting along with friends, parents, or teachers. He/she is also interested in positive things going on in your life such as your school achievements, unique talents, activity in sports or special interests you may have.
The screening may involve checking urine, vision, and hearing or a simple blood test to check cholesterol and signs of anemia. Someone will look at your medical record to make sure that you are up to date on all your vaccines. Your healthcare provider will also want to discuss your health habits with you. Questions may be asked regarding sleep, exercise, weight management, food choices, cigarette, alcohol, or drug use. If you are sexually active you may expect to have a pelvic exam or be referred for further care. In this case birth control will be discussed and safer sex practices reviewed. FX knows that it can feel scary to talk to your doctor or medical professional about these types of issues, but you really need to. Your doctor will not discuss this information with anyone and it is important for you to be able to communicate about all kinds of issues so that you can learn to take good care of yourself.
