Published: February 23, 2004
Dear TeenHealthFX,
My right eye keeps watering consistently - I don't have a clue what it wrong with it - the left one is fine - I keep touching my eye to dry the tears away but now it is red and sore.

Dear Watery Eyes,
FX can see why this would be bothersome and are glad that you recognize that eyes that are red, sore and tear is not normal. The symptoms that you have described commonly occur as a result of an allergy, an infection, or an irritation from a substance entering the eye. You should get this checked out by your doctor soon, not only so you can have some relief, but if you are contagious you will not spread it to your other eye or other people. It is especially important to get this checked out if you wear contact lenses.
Until you can see the doctor it is recommended that you wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eye, and reduce your exposure to bright lights or other irritants like smoke.
Call your doctor today and make an appointment. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health for an appointment or contact your local teen health clinic.
