Dear TeenHealthFX,
I sometimes only use the bathroom once every couple of weeks. There is no pain or additional irritation to me. Should I be worried?

Dear Go to the Bathroom Every Couple Weeks,
People differ on how often they have a bowel movement, ranging from a couple of times per day to once every several days. This is normal and each person's body is different. Once every couple of weeks, however, is less than optimal and can lead to constipation. Constipation happens when your body finds it difficult to pass a bowel movement or stool. When it becomes uncomfortable or your stool is hard and does not pass easily, you are constipated.
Also, sometimes a constipated person will feel cramping and pain in the rectal area. TeenHealthFX thinks you should consider going to your doctor for an exam to find out why you may have sluggish bowels.
While you are waiting to go to the doctor, here are some helpful ways to reduce constipation:
- Eat a healthy, well balanced diet. See the question "Eating Healthy".
- Eat foods high in fiber, like fruits, vegetable and whole grains (prunes, bran-products, beans, etc.).
- Avoid foods high in fat.
- Drink 6-8 glasses of water.
- Exercise 3-5 times per week.
- Do not make a habit of holding your stool. If you have the urge to have a bowel movement, find a bathroom and go.
- Do not use laxatives or other over-the-counter medication unless prescribed by your doctor.
