Eye Issues / Question

Dear TeenHealthFX,

What is astigmatism? Are they caused by bacteria that enters the eye?

Signed: Astigmatism

Dear Astigmatism,

Astigmatism is an eye disorder that is caused by the cornea being oval shaped rather than rounded. The more oval the cornea is, the more severe the astigmatism is. The oval shaped cornea or astigmatism causes a distortion and blurring in vision. It is not caused by bacteria. Astigmatism does not get better or worse over time.

Only a doctor can diagnose and treat astigmatism. Astigmatism is usually diagnosed during an eye exam and is easily corrected with glasses and/or contact lenses. If you think you may have astigmatism, see your eye doctor for help.
