Feces, Poop & Butt Issues / Question
Published: June 3, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hello. I have had blood in my stool for over 2 years now. I went to a doctor and he checked with his finger and thought there might be a tear and I should stop eating peanuts and stuff like popcorn which I don't anyways. Now today when I had a bowel movement the whole toilet water was red and it was dripping down, later I checked again but there was only a little still coming out, should I be concerned or should I just consider this a tear?

Dear Blood In My Stool For 2 Years,

Blood in the stool is serious, and you should really go back to your doctor as soon as possible so that it can be determined if a tear or another problem caused this. If you can contact the physician who has treated you for this problem in the past, that would be helpful since he understands your medical history, or you can see a new healthcare professional. Just make sure that you let a new doctor know exactly what has happened in the past, and how it was treated.

As you know, blood in the stool can be a sign of tears or anal fissures, hemorrhoids, or something more serious. Eating a diet high in fiber and making sure you drink enough water can reduce the likelihood of becoming constipated with can cause straining and may cause tears or hemorrhoids.

Check out Blood During Wiping to hear about another teen who has discovered blood following a bowel movement. Also, again get checked out by a doctor again just to make sure everything is okay.
