Pee & Urine Issues - Pain, Bed-Wetting, Amount & Frequency / Question
Published: January 12, 2000
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I often wet the bed at night due to a fear of walking around in the dark. The last time I attempted to go to the bathroom at night, I ran into a wall and got a large lump on my forehead. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Nocturnal Bed Wetter,
A question comes to mind for FX: Are you waking up because your bladder is giving you signals that you have to urinate? It sounds from your question that it is, which is good. That means that there is no problem physically that is causing you to wet the bed. If you were not waking up until after you have wet the bed, TeenHealthFX would suggest that you speak to your doctor about it. Bed-wetting is very common and sometimes people with this condition do not even have a physical problem. However, this is often a very embarrassing thing to happen. Because of that embarrassment and you asking for help, we are hopefully going to address your issue.
You stated that you are afraid to walk around at night in the dark. We need to find a happy medium here and a solution to your problem. Many people wake up at night and are often discombobulated and disoriented with their surrounding. One way to overcome this feeling is to lie in bed for a minute to orient yourself to the surrounding environment and to let your eyes adjust to the light. Walking around in the dark when you are half-asleep is dangerous which explains that huge bump on your forehead. You may need to use some type of night-light or keep the hall or bathroom light on. This will provide you with enough light to see the walls, hall and bedroom. Lots of people have this concern and find some comfort in night-lights.
If you try some of these suggestions and they do not work, talk to your doctor about it. Again, you may find this embarrassing, but many people are bed-wetters and your doctor deals with this all the time.
