Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have varicose veins! They are not really bad, in fact they are only visible in one leg on the back of my knee and still they are hardly visible, but a factor of varicose veins is bad blood circulation. I get teased and called "pepperoni legs" because I get pink, purple, peach, blue etc color spots on my legs almost always. I have tried exercising, but the spots go away for about 5 minutes and then come back. I can't motivate myself to get off this chair and exercise because I'm too lazy. I can't afford to have surgery, so I want sclerotherapy, but my mom wont pay. It's really embarrassing in the summer when we do P.E. and I wear shorts because then you can see the spots and people just gawk at them and make me feel self-conscious! Help!

Dear Help For Varicose Veins,

What you are describing does not sound like varicose veins.  It is very unusual for a teen to have varicose veins.  TeenHealthFX suggests you see your doctor or healthcare provider for an evaluation and a treatment plan.  If you do not have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475.  Outside of this area, contact your local teen clinic.
