Name That Symptom / Question
Published: April 17, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a 16 year old boy, and sometimes I have this pain in my chest after sleeping for long periods of time. (12+ hours) My sister says she gets it as well, but long hours for her is like 8+ hours. Also, while we're in the general area, sometimes I get a tickling sensation when I breathe, it's right in the area between my chest and neck. Annnd, Sometimes after walking to school, my voice tends to come out a little high. After a few minutes of talking it eventually lowers itself back down though. Just some curious questions. Thanks.

Dear Pain In Chest & Voice Changes,

The best person to answer most of these questions is your doctor, since he or she has information like your medical history, current health status, and can conduct a complete physical examination. These symptoms could be just minor discomforts that cause little or no harm, or they may be the sign of something more serious.

Anytime you have pain in your chest, it is important to get it checked out. It may be due to extended periods of time laying on your stomach which may put pressure on your chest. Again, any concern about breathing and chest pain, deserves a trip to the doctor to get a full evaluation.

The change in your voice may be some puberty changes that are still taking place or may be related to breathing difficulties. The complete process of puberty may still be ongoing, so it may be as long as a couple of years before your voice settles into its adult range.

If you live in northern NJ, and would like to find a doctor, call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971-6475. For more information about vocal changes due to puberty, see our answer to "Voice Cracking Again".
