Dear TeenHealthFX,

My brothers has oral herpes. If our toothbrushes share the same cup and his toothbrush head leans against mine, can I get his herpes?

Dear Oral Herpes From Toothbrushes Touching?,

TeenHealthFX was not able to find any specific information as to how long the herpes virus can live on a toothbrush. What we would advise is the following:

·         In general, do not place your toothbrush in a container where it will have direct contact with another person’s toothbrush. There can be many different types of germs on a toothbrush – even as simple as germs that would cause the common cold. So generally it would be best to keep your toothbrush in a separate place from those of any other family member.

·         If your toothbrush has been in direct contact with your brother’s (or anyone else’s), replace that toothbrush with a new one or thoroughly wash it.

If you have any of the signs or symptoms of oral herpes listed below, then see your doctor for follow-up.

·         Fever blisters or cold sores around the mouth or facial area

·         Sores around the mouth that are painful and/or ooze clear or yellow fluid

·         Fatigue, fever or swollen glands

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
