Dear TeenHealthFX,
Is a cold an allergy?

Dear Cold & Allergies,
Having a cold or being sick is not an allergy. The symptoms of allergies can make you feel like you have a cold. Both colds and allergies have similar symptoms including a runny nose, itchy eyes, and a scratchy throat. Colds are caused by viral infections and usually last 7-10 days.
An allergy is your body's way of letting you know that it does not like something in your environment. Allergies like hayfever, pollen, dust or pets cause your body to attempt to try to "fight off" the irritating substance. The symptoms can last for weeks and allergies are frequently relieved with over the counter antihistamines. The best control of symptoms is to limit your exposure to the substances you are allergic to.
More serious allergies, especially food, medication, bee stings or bug bites can cause a severe reaction. Severe allergic reactions include swelling, inability to breathe and a painful or itchy rash. If you feel like you are having a severe allergic reaction, seek emergency medical assistance immediately or get help from an adult.
If you feel like you may be suffering from allergies, please talk to your doctor about it. They can help in identifying your allergies and provide you with medication if needed.
