Body Temperature: Sweating & Coldness / Question
Published: January 17, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I have a little problem. my hands sweat. I know that sounds really gross, but they do a lot. And it's kind of embarrassing, especially if I have to hold a guy's hand or sweat on their hands. And it's not when I'm nervous or something, but at any given moment. something. Is there anything to stop this? Can I get a prescription or something to keep my hands from sweating? Please help! Is this normal? Do other people also have this?

Dear Hands Sweat,
It is common for most people's hands to sweat, especially if they are nervous (see the TeenHealthFX answer to "Sweaty Hands").
However it sounds like you believe your problem is more complicated then a case of nerves. There is a medical term for excessive hand sweat known as palmar hyperhidrosis. This occurs when perspiration exceeds the physiological needs of the body. The origin of this condition is generally unknown.
Persons with Palmer Hyperhidrosis often seek treatment when the condition causes them a great deal of distress. We are talking about having difficulty holding a pen, tools, buttons and social isolation. Perhaps the most distressing result of palmer hyperhidrosis is the discomfort and embarrassment caused by the simple act of shaking hands.
If you feel the problem of excessive hand sweating is having a severe impact on your life then you may want to consult a doctor. There are some non-surgical procedures to treat the condition, which would be best tried under a physician's care. If you do not have a doctor and live in northern
