Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a 15 year old male. What is a hernia and how can I tell if I have one?

Signed: Hernia Questions

Dear Hernia Questions,

More common in males than females, a hernia happens when abdominal tissue pushes out through a weak spot in the lower abdominal wall.

Appearing in the groin (lower abdomen and stomach) and scrotum area (sack under your penis), some symptoms of a hernia are:

  1. Pain, burning and pressure in the groin and scrotum
  2. A lump in the groin or scrotum
  3. Pain and pressure when lifting, exercising or coughing

Heavy lifting, coughing, or over exerting during urination or a bowel movement may result in a hernia in someone who has an area of weakness in the abdominal or groin muscles. Using a good lifting technique from the knees and treating constipation can usually prevent one.

As with any medical concern and especially if you feel you have a hernia, you should see a doctor. Your doctor can refer you to a surgeon, if necessary.
