Dear What Is Typhoid?,
Typhoid is a gram-negative bacterium called Salmonella Typhi; infected water or milk supplies transmit it. Food handlers are often responsible for the spread of the infection. It is more common in areas of developing countries where sanitation is poor.
Early signs and symptoms are general weakness, headaches, and indefinite pains. Temperature can go as high as 104-105 degrees. Abdominal pain, constipation and a rash on the trunk are also common.
A doctor should make the diagnosis because this infection/disease can be very dangerous. If your doctor has any concerns that you might have typhoid they will run some blood tests, evaluate your stool for evidence of the infection, make sure that your spleen is not enlarged (by physical exam).
The treatment is usually bed rest and antibiotics, but it is very important to get the correct treatment because complications can include intestinal hemorrhage or perforation.
