Dear TeenHealthFX,

What types of over the counter or medications can cause elevated liver enzymes, and why?

Signed: OTC's & Elevated Liver Enzymes

Dear OTC's & Elevated Liver Enzymes,

Liver enzymes are special proteins found in the cells of the liver that are responsible for specific functions. They may become elevated in the bloodstream in conditions of hepatitis, liver cancer, and other health concerns. It is possible that elevated liver enzymes could be due to taking a lot of acetaminophen (Tylenol) or other over-the-counter medication, as well as excessive alcohol use.  Certain herbs like kava-kava have also been known to cause elevated liver enzymes.

TeenHealthFX  recommends that you talk to your doctor about this if you have more concerns. Your doctor can ask you these questions and provide you with a more detailed explanation.
